Cards are reportedly paying about 25% of Leake's salary going forward. Mariners on the hook for about $12M per year.

Edit: More like 30%. Lynn confirms that the Cardinals have had zero communication with him about an extension. Mozeliak has indicated their intention to "go young" with the rotation next year.

Yikes. I like the trade but I dunno that I am a fan of that comment. There still is an open slot IMO that could be filled either through FA (Lynn/Darvish) or trade.

I think that's your likely rotation set up coming out of Spring Training and I'm fairly okay with it. Gotta focus on a big bat.

If that is what Mozeliak actually said and was pointed in this direction by DeWitt then I am disappointed. I'll reserve comment/judgement until I see what else transpires.

I wish Leake the best in Seattle.

Yea, I don't think I'm a fan of that comment either. I don't like relying on a mostly young rotation. You've got to have some form of veteran presence there, Lynn would be perfect. Not sure you can count on Waino like you used to.

Worth pointing out that during a pre-game dinner event with Mo and Girsch it was reported that Girsch said that they were going to lose Lynn this winter. So it sounds as if the expectation is that they will not re-sign him.

That sets up the 2018 rotation as Martinez, Wainwright, Wacha, and two open spots likely to Weaver and Flaherty. With Gomber and Hudson set to bridge their innings gaps. Part of me wonders if they don't shop Wacha this winter too. I would.

That's a really young rotation if they do. Especially since I don't think you count on Wainwright to give you 200 innings of quality ball anymore.

There is nobody in next year's expected rotation that I would bet money on to make 32 or more starts next year.

Jen Langosch reporting that Jack Flaherty will start on Friday for the Cardinals. 2.18 ERA over 25 starts between Memphis and Springfield this season.

Combined with today's loss I'd say the time has come to wave the white flag on 2017. If the information in today's posts here plays out might wanna have another white flag ready for 2018. If you're counting on CMart to anchor your rotation for years we're in trouble. If you're big-splash FA signings trod along at the Fowler/Cecil level you're in big trouble. If you're plan is to continue to run 6-10 AA & AAA guys through the lineup every season like you have the last couple you're in trouble. Ownership needs to step-up their payroll & their efforts SUBSTANTIALLY and get this ship back on-track. We're more than a better Mgr or a couple meh signings away from excellence. And the vacuum Yadi will leave soon, with not one other veteran anchor on the roster that I can see, is going to be devastating.

Ton of big, glaring holes across the entire spectrum that leave me extremely concerned.

Don't forget about Reyes. He will be either in the rotation, or in the pen (obviously). Not ready to anoint Weaver or Flaherty a spot in the rotation.

It also wouldn't surprise me if Martinez is included in a deal for a bat, or a closer.

The important thing to remember about Martinez is that he is still just 25. There aren't a lot of pitchers who were dominant aces at that age. And when you look at most guys that we'd all gush over having and then look at what they were doing at 25, Martinez stands out

Reyes won't be in the rotation next year. He wasn't going to be this year and he won't be far enough away to be ready. He'll either start in Memphis or relieve in St. Louis or they'll pull a Medlen with him and build him up to start and by the end of the season slide him in. Reyes hasn't thrown more than 110ish innings in a season, off the top of my head, so I don't see him opening the season in the rotation in STL in any way.

Also, the Cardinals called up John Gant to fill Leake's roster spot and designated Kevin Siegrist for assignment.

Another young bullpen arm blown out by the leader of men. Add him to the group of Maness and Rosenthal already. With Bowman next in line. Hopefully they dump him before he gets to someone like Alcantera...

I wouldn't bet on Mike going anywhere, Hardy.

I'm not either, yet. I just feel sorry for Bowman in advance. You know he is next in line.

And also us, for having to watch him be the only one oblivious to it and countless other mistakes he makes.
