Luis Robert cleared to sign with teams

Postby R27 » Thu Apr 20, 2017 12:44 pm

Cuban phenom Luis Robert has now been cleared to sign with MLB teams.

Perhaps something that could be important is he has been teammates with Adolis Garcia in the Cuban National Series. Might the possibility of playing with him and Diaz be attractive to him?

The Cardinals are in penalty, so they will pay a dollar per dollar fine for the contract if they sign him before June 15th, otherwise they are out. The Cubs and Dodgers are out. The Red Sox and Yankees are out until June 15th. It's a perfect storm for the Cardinals who lost their first two picks in this year's draft. As close to a must-sign player as there is. And maybe one of the few types of players capable of filling the Taveras sized hole in the organization.

There's a lot of hype around him. Some calling him the best player on the planet. But the bottom line is that he will probably get a bigger deal than Yasiel Puig did ($42M/7). So he could very well become the most expensive Cardinals contract in history.

I think it'd be a worthwhile move. There is absolutely nothing to lose.

Only thing lost is money and this guy is basically a top 5 draft pick, likely top 3. With the team already over the international limit and penalized for the next 2 years, plus the lost draft picks this year, it just makes too much sense to go all out to get him.

Except a lot of money, but yes.

He should be a good player. We have other Cubans in the organization, which I would think would be attractive. A lot of the other teams that would be in the mix are in the same situation the Cardinals are as far as the penalties in this period (obviously taking advantage that the Cubs, Dodgers, Red Sox, and Yankees are out). Should be interesting to watch.

You know my feelings about this team and cash. They are loaded. So they may as well make a push for this guy.

Agree 100%. I would hope Mo/DeWitt will truly participate and go all out for this man and not simply put in a phone call & kick the tires.

The favorites to sign Robert.

I think it's funny that in the article they credit the White Sox for have an aggresive reputation in the international market for signing Abreu in 2013 and receiving Moncada in the Sale trade. That's aggressive?

Seeing that the Padres have signed 45 players in the international period and are already on the books for an $80 million hit, I have to question their ability to go after Robert.

I think it will come down Cardinals, White Sox, and A's. The Cardinals certainly have the biggest need and the deepest pockets.

Trading for arguably the best prospect in baseball has to do with the international market?

the White Sox are not in the penalty for exceeding their bonus pool amount during the current international signing period

This I actually see as a bad thing for them. Not only will it cost them the cost + the penalty, but it will cost them 2 years of international pool money that they would have if they don't sign him. Teams like the Padres and the Cards already lost that extra pool money, so it is really just more money for them, no extra restrictions on going after future players. Not to say that they won't still go hard after him, but the quoted is actually a deterrent to them, not a positive thing.

It could be, but it really depends how much they value that international market. I see it that if they're interested in signing him and don't care about that penalty, they might be willing to spend further because not every dollar they spend is penalized. So if all teams were willing to spend the same amount, more money goes to the player on the White Sox's offer. Maybe an extra $1.2M if I'm doing my math correctly.

The White Sox in general seem to be on the more less active teams in the international market. given the list of current international signings in this period. Only six players. Only 13 teams have less. But the teams ahead of them typically have twice as many.

I just can't see that extra $1.2M or whatever the relatively small amount as enough of a positive to counteract the fact that you can't pay anyone over 300k over the next two years. That's a pretty big deterrent, especially with the new CBA rules that will pretty much put teams on an even playing field for international talent. At best it gives them a tiny amount more salary they can offer IF they are offering exactly the same amount. But that just seems so minimal for it to be listed as a concrete positive like the article made it seem.

Read that this is down to the Cardinals and White Sox. I really hope we end up getting to root for him.

Sounds like he is finalizing a deal with the White Sox between $25M-30M. The Cardinals reportedly had a higher offer than the White Sox, but the White Sox apparently "wowed" him during their meeting.
